Should Rap or Hip Hop Ever Have To Be Apologetic?

I have diverse tastes musically but my two big genres of interest are Hip Hop and Alternative Indie music. Whenever I’m with a group of friends that don’t enjoy hip hop or rap as much as I do, I feel bad internally for enjoying this music, because of the messages that some songs and artists (By no means does this include everyone involved in the genre) portray.

I don’t think anyone who truly enjoys hip hop and rap is oblivious to the negative messages and imagery of rap and hip hop. Rarely have I gone a whole day without listening to bitch, nigga, or faggot (or any homophobic equivalent) being slipped into the lyrics of a song. I do not intend to defend artists who use such language nor will I hold a pitchfork and torch to them. I see hip hop and rap as art like any other music form.

Art is not always pleasant or easy to interpret. Hip hop and Rap have been the musical anthem of struggle for me. Emotional struggle of being alone, having broken homes, losing loved ones, being so angry you could scream. Physical struggle or working tirelessly without reaping a golden reward at the end of the day. And the biggest struggle of all; understanding life and where you fit. So I ask this question to fans and opponents of hip hop and rap, to better understand how these genres are viewed.
